In my January column, I mentioned that the universal year for 1998 resonates with the frequency of the number 9 (1+9+9+8 =27, 2+7 =9). We can use this numerological process for determining the energy for each month of the year, as well. Supporting the main themes for the year, Completion and Unity, we have 12 sub-themes that we can focus on each month.

By adding the universal year 27/9 to the fourth month of April, we come up with 31/4. The 31/4 month is about practical accomplishment on the physical plane. This month the challenge is to combine our creativity and joy (3) with one-pointed focus and concentration (1). So, get focused and grounded, but remember to have fun along the way.

April 1-3 Mars conjunct Saturn. With Mars in Aries conjunct Saturn in Aries, this is a great time to move into mastery on the physical plane. Mars/Saturn helps us concentrate our willpower, or master ourselves, so that we can accomplish a great deal. The only challenge is to do so without exhausting ourselves. Use the Mars/Saturn conjunction to help you follow through with constructive action on whatever goals you want to implement at this time.

April 5 Venus enters Pisces. Venus enters Pisces, the sign of compassionate surrender, on Palm Sunday this year. Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter and is a celebration of the day that Jesus returned to Jerusalem before his crucifixion and resurrection. With Venus in Pisces for a little over a month, we have an opportunity to resurrect, or "rise again" ourselves. Venus in Pisces brings awareness of how we can be more accepting of ourselves and others. In other words, no matter what we have done (or have failed to do), we are always loved in the eyes of God/Goddess. Let the unconditional acceptance of Venus in Pisces permeate every cell of your being this month.

The challenge this month is to really acknowledge the vulnerability and fear of rejection or abandonment we may feel when we express our true needs to others.

April 11 Full moon in Libra. The Moon is full at 21 degrees Libra on April 22 at 2:24 p.m. For this month, the emphasis is on experiencing balance and harmony with loved ones. The moon in Libra calls us to balance our desire for intimate merging with others while at the same time acknowledging our own need for autonomy. The challenge this month is to really acknowledge the vulnerability and fear of rejection or abandonment we may feel when we express our true needs to others. The full moon in Libra is asking us to communicate from a balanced center, where we consider both the needs of the other and ourselves equally.

April 12 Mars enters Taurus. Mars, the planet of personal will, moves through the sign of Taurus from April 12 until May 24. With Mars in an earth sign, it is a great time to formulate and implement your plans. With Mars in Taurus, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get dirty! Taurus represents the process of formulating or codifying what we value so that we can share it with others in a very practical and down-to-earth way.

Use Mars in Taurus to help you handle all the grunt work that needs to be done so that you can clear a path for sharing your ideas or values with others. Use Mars in Taurus to catch up with all the physical things (remodeling, repairing, beautifying, etc.) that you need to get done. Your energy will be stronger at this time, so just be careful not to be too "bullish."

April 12-14 Venus square Pluto. Venus in challenging relationship to Pluto puts fire behind our ideals. How can we combine the love and unconditional acceptance of Venus in Pisces with the transformative power of Pluto in Sagittarius? One way is to find out what we’re passionate about. Many people, when asked, "What are you passionate about?" may not be able to answer. Ask them what they are indignant about, however, and you will get an entirely different answer!

With Venus square Pluto, take some time to discover what gets you steamed up. If we can take the negative spin off anger for a second and see it as just energy in motion, then our indignation or righteous anger gives us a clue of where to put our energy. Throw in a little compassion, a splash of Sagittarian wit and wisdom, and you have a powerful recipe for putting action behind your idealism!

April 19 Sun enters Taurus. The sun moves into the sign of Taurus on April 19 at 10:56 p.m. In nature, the outward impulse to manifest and thrive that was present in Aries now gives way to the methodical and practical shaping of the new life, thereby creating a secure foundation for future growth. The Taurus principle involves the practical shaping and formation of value. Our job during the sign of Taurus is to define and codify our values, what we own, so that we can actualize our potential and leave an inspiring legacy for others.

April 19 Mercury direct. Mercury, which has been retrograde since March 27, goes direct again at 9 degrees Aries on April 19. Mercury retrogrades help us to see, through external events, at what level our Mercury function (or intellect) is operating. With Mercury direct in Aries, it’s time to take out the lists (or create them!) of what you want to accomplish over the next month. Mercury in Aries helps us to pinpoint our focus of attention. Be specific about what you what to create and what it will take for you to manifest your goals. Then, like the warrior, focus all your attention on what action needs to be taken in the moment.

This is an incredible time for opening the heart and expanding our sense of unconditional love for self and others.

April 21-23 Venus conjunct Jupiter. The two most beneficial planets, Venus and Jupiter, unite from April 21 until April 23. This is an incredible time for opening the heart and expanding our sense of unconditional love for self and others. I would highly recommend that you read The Ecstatic Moment by Paul Ferrini sometime during this month. Subtitled a practical manual for opening your heart and staying in it, it’s one of my favorite books right now. (Appropriately, Paul will be giving a free talk at Seattle First Baptist Church on the evening of the 22nd; call [206] 325-6051 for details.)

I’d like to quote this book now, as it really speaks to me of the wonderful joining of the planetary energies of Venus (the heart) and Jupiter (higher mind): "You are acceptable as you are, no matter how many mistakes you think you have made. There is nothing you have thought, felt, or done that prevents you from realizing your perfection here and now."

April 26 New Moon in Taurus. The new moon is in Taurus this month beginning at 3:42 a.m. this morning. A new moon occurs when the sun and moon are in the same sign, and signifies the joining of solar and lunar energies. With the new moon in Taurus, what nurtures us this month is getting more grounded and in touch with the natural world. Digging in the garden, or any outdoor activity where you really experience being in your body, is very healing and nurturing at this time. Attunement to the earth through Native American or indigenous cultures' rituals is also a way of getting grounded this month.
