Theres an old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times." Lately the times feel pretty interesting to me. But I trust that this, like any good curse, is a prelude to something special, something magical. Prince Charming, maybe, with a kiss big enough to wake up the whole world. With network news coverage looking increasingly like commercials for misguided patriotism, we could use it right about now. As the war machine trudges on, a shift in focus is needed. War has happened, and its time to face the new challenges rising from the ashes. The humanitarian crisis that always follows war is a primary concern. Agencies like the Red Cross <www.redcross.org>, UNICEF <www.unicef.org> and Mercy Corps <www.mercycorps.org> are working to provide much-needed assistance to the homeless, the starving, the injured and the displaced. As always, but especially now, they need support. One of the next major battles will be the 2004 Presidential election. Thats when the real chips will fall, as we discover whether the massive anti-war sentiment in this country was deeply felt or just a passing mood. Much depends on how many of us get out there and vote. Our voices can make all the difference, but only if we raise them. We have the opportunity to use these "interesting times" as a catalyst for change. So heres the real question: Are you still lost in enchanted slumber, or are you ready for that magic kiss? Here at The New Times, growth and transformation continue. April was the last month for Deborah Koans "Intuitively Speaking" column. Id like to thank Deborah for joining her energy with ours these last ten months. Shes brightened these pages with her sunny vibe, and all of us at The New Times bless her as she moves on to her next step. Were preparing a number of new editorial features this year. First up is "In the News," a selection of news clips in areas of special interest to cultural creatives: environment, natural health, spirituality, personal growth and social responsibility. In the months that follow, youll see this section expand as we bring you more thoughtfully chosen "news bites" from Seattle and around the world. Theres more to come as the year unfolds watch us evolve! |
