In some people’s eyes, it is the source of all life — we call God “the Creator,” a role that precedes all other roles we’ve created on earth. In Matthew Fox’s new book, creativity “saves. Its opposite kills.” He intones the words of a creative spiritual teacher: “Jesus said: ‘When you bring forth that which is within you, that which is yours will save you. But if you do not save that in yourself, that which is not yours in you will kill you.’” In light of today’s challenges, Mr. Fox implores us to respond creatively. In our striving for a balance between safety and security, and liberty and freedom, he quotes the words of biblical scholar Walter Brueggmann: “Every totalitarian regime is frightened of the artist. It is the vocation of the prophet to keep alive the ministry of imagination, to keep on conjuring and proposing alternative futures to the one the king wants to urge as the only thinkable one.” Lightning at the Gate: A Visionary Journey of Healing by Jeanne Achterberg Shambhala $23.95 (hardback) reviewed by Leah Morgaine I had just attended a seminar at East West Bookshop. The store was closing in a few minutes, and I wanted to stroll around and see if anything would catch my eye. This book practically jumped off the shelf at me. Yet another book about the journey through cancer, this one comes with a twist. The author is a famous researcher on the use of guided imagery for the treatment of serious diseases, and this book is a personal and extremely honest record of a year of her life after her own diagnosis of eye cancer. As an instructor of mind-body medicine myself who was also diagnosed with cancer, I found this book riveting.
