A Recipe for Hope:
An Interview with Frances Moore Lappé

by Susan Chiat

"We find hope because we have to. We find hope because our planet needs us to. We find hope because we are alive."

— Frances Moore Lappé and Anna Lappé, Hope’s Edge

When I left my parent’s home in 1978 at the tender age of 18, I bcame a vegetarian for the simple reason that I didn’t like cooking meat. It wasn’t a politically conscious nor nutritionally informed decision. Rather it was one that rose organically from within me, a celebration of my new found independence. At first, being a vegetarian simply meant avoiding eating meat of any kind. I was uneducated about healthy alternatives and hesitant to eat what I had recently thought of as birdseed. My vegetarian cooking and education was severely limited until I discovered the vegetarian bible, Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappé.

For the Love of Pigs

by Eileen Weintraub

"Peace be to this farm and to all who dwell in it. Peace be to them that enter and to them that depart."

— 16th century blessing at the front gate of Pigs Peace Sanctuary

The fog has not yet lifted when the sounds of contented grunts and snorts are heard on a chilly morning. Here the donated produce from Madison Market Co-op is being distributed. Apples, lettuce, and carrots are providing a happy feast for pigs. Merlin, an enormous pig, cracks open a watermelon and trots off swiftly with a substantial piece in his mouth to enjoy in a corner by himself.

From the Editor

To me, the notion that we are preparing to go to war feels strange and surreal. I don’t know anyone — not a single friend or acquaintance — who supports that direction. According to a recent CBS News poll, only 29% of Americans believe the U.S. should take militarCharles Alkire, Not In Our Name, NION, Greenlake Peace Vigil action in Iraq, yet 74% of us expect war to happen. Many of us were horrified by passage of the Homeland Security bill and the resultant sweeping changes to our civil rights. Increasingly, it feels like the actions of our elected officials are out of touch with the values and wishes of the American people.

By adding the universal year 2003, (2+0+0+3) = 5, to the 2nd month of February we come up with the vibration of 7. The 7 month is about taking the time to tune into what has meaning in your life. It is a time for inner reflection, contemplation, and rest. Use this month to tap into what has meaning for you through art, meditation, being close to nature and, if possible, retreat time. Look to see how you can create a harmonious balance between alone time for expanding your insights, creativity, and practical accomplishment.

February 1: Practice Detachment. The new moon at 12 degrees Aquarius brings in a new cycle of growth and awareness this month. Relationships, in particular, will be affected by this event as the moon represents what we need for emotional security. The new moon in Aquarius calls us to learn emotional detachment. The challenge is to be able to detach from your relationship dramas without abandoning your partner. In other words, the challenge is to learn how to maintain your own sense of personal autonomy while being emotionally present to the needs and desires of others.

The month of February carries deep lessons in self-nurturing. When the world around us goes through changes, we reach for stability and nurturing either from outside ourselves or inside ourselves. If you typically look outside yourself to receive nurturing, you will probably feel like you are not able to get filled up this month. What used to feel good no longer does the trick. If you have learned how to nurture yourself from the inside, you will be able to step outside yourself and see the bigger picture. Life as a whole will become more manageable because you will be able to see how to take care of yourself in any given situation.
