As a spiritual teacher and counselor, this is the reference book I’ve been waiting for. I know there are other books on the topic of chakras, yet I feel this is one of the best out there. It is a coffee-table size book, it is beautifully illustrated, has very good descriptions of the chakras, and has techniques and exercises for tuning into the chakras and getting to know their uses. It can’t get any better than that!

The term chakra comes from the ancient Sanskrit word meaning "wheel of light," referring to the subtle energy found around all living beings. There are seven main chakras that reside within the human energy field, and each corresponds to an area of the physical body and a gland associated with that area. Each chakra is experienced as a color in the light spectrum, roughly following the rainbow pattern.

Ms. Wauters colorfully illustrates these relationships with images and clear text. She begins each chakra chapter with a chart that lists the attributes of the chakra, the typical shape associated with it, its glandular connection, its color, the musical key it vibrates at, which of the four elements it is involved with, its planetary association, positive and negative archetypes, and even related physical and spiritual activities.

I especially appreciate the affirmations to energize and strengthen one’s personal connection to each center. She also has meditations to get in touch with each chakra, but I like the affirmations for a direct link and re-enforcement. For instance, the solar plexus (third) chakra affirmations include:

"I am worth my weight in Gold. I am worthy of love, kindness and respect, regardless of what I have done. I am worthy because I exist. I am worthy of the life I say I want. I am worthy of the best…."

The solar plexus is the chakra most associated with the ego and one’s personal will. It seems to be an area of challenge for so many of us as we strive to be genuine and feel worthy without having to constantly bolster that rascally ego of ours. The above affirmation confirms our worthiness to exist and be respected.

If you are a beginner on the spiritual path, this is an invaluable book you will want to study and study again. If you have been on the path for a while, there are enough reminders to keep you happily accessing and remembering the subtle powers that are your chakras.

From the affirmations of the Crown (seventh) chakra, I offer:

"God is in me, above me, below me, and around me at all times. . . . Thank you for my life, for who I am, and for what you have allowed me to become."
