From the Editor

The New Times’ staff went on an amazing retreat in October. We stayed at Fertile Ground Guesthouse in Olympia, a warm, welcoming, magical place. It was the perfect choice for our little getaway. I think I speak for all of us here when I say that Fertile Ground was a wonderful surprise. We’d seen their ads, of course, and some of us had checked out their website, but neither conveys the quality of the experience we had. The folks at Fertile Ground are doing some pretty amazing things — they’ve created a model of sustainable living that all their guests can enjoy and learn from. We spent the better part of three days relaxing, releasing, exploring, enjoying great food, and setting our intent for the next stage of The New Times’ development. Michele Morgan joined us for an afternoon and helped us lift our eyes from the day-to-day minutiae so we could envision the road ahead.

Nature Has a Mind of Its Own

by Christian de Quincey

What’s the greatest mystery facing every person on the planet? Ultimately, it’s some version of the age-old "Where do I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?" These questions, which lie at the heart of all philosophy and religion, can be summed up as: "How do I fit in?" How do we humans (with our rich interior lives of emotions, feelings, imaginations, and ideas) fit into the world around us, a world that is supposed to be made up of physical, mindless, soulless atoms and energy? That’s a scientific question. And, so far, no one has produced a satisfactory explanation.

Depressives Anonymous

by Douglas Bloch, M.A.

In his groundbreaking book Love and Survival, cardiologist Dean Ornish says, "Anything that promotes a sense of isolation often leads to illness and suffering. Anything that promotes a sense of love and intimacy, connection and community, is healing." Nowhere is this truth more evident than in the treatment of clinical depression.

A depressive illness is a whole-body disorder, involving one’s physiology, biochemistry, mood, thoughts, and behavior. It affects the way you eat and sleep and the way you think and feel about yourself, others, and the world. Clinical depression is not a passing blue mood or a sign of personal weakness. Subtle changes in the brain’s chemistry can create a terrible malaise in the body-mind-spirit that can affect every dimension of your being.

StarWatch

By adding the universal year 2002, (2+0+0+2) = 4, to the 11th month of November, we come up with the vibration of 15/6. The 6 month asks us to tune into how we can be of service to others through expressing the healing power of love. The challenge this month is to learn how to tap into your love of beauty and harmony so that you can come into balance. Take some time this month to work on beautifying your environment. By doing so you will feel more harmonious and balanced and others will feel healed solely by being in your space. Try to see yourself as a channel for unconditional love. As you tap into this love yourself, you will be able to give it out to others without feeling burdened or drained.

Scorpio: Searchinging the Depths

by Pam Younghans

This is the eighth article in a series exploring the 12 astrological signs. In Western Astrology, the sky is divided into 12 equal sections, beginning with Aries at the Vernal Equinox and continuing through the rest of the zodiac. Exact dates for the beginning and ending of each sign vary from year to year. Please consult a qualified astrologer to verify your sun sign, and to get a more complete picture of your entire astrological chart. Although the description below applies especially to those who were born when the sun was in Scorpio, it also applies in varying degrees for everyone, as we all have Scorpio represented in our charts.

I immediately get a picture of play for the month of November! The energy on the planet this summer and through the beginning of fall has been a bit intense and contracted. Growth always comes from intense, contracted energy, so that is a good thing. The energy is now shifting to a place of expansion and play, which will facilitate a natural release from the past few months. Play is an important piece to growth; without it, we would be in a state of serious stress 100% of the time. Play can come in many forms.
