Many thanks to those of you who took the time to complete our 2002 reader survey. We are poring over the results and considering a number of significant changes to be as responsive as possible to your input. This was the first time we offered our readers a choice of sending in the survey in written form or completing it online at our Web site. I was a bit apprehensive about offering this choice, concerned that well-meaning readers who would have responded in writing would choose to send in their responses online but then not get around to it.

Greatness as a Way of Life
by Mary Manin Morrissey

A woman recently told me how she’d gaze out her kitchen window while making dinner and sigh as her elderly neighbor passed by. "I wish there was something I could do," Anna thought. The older woman who once walked with such vigor and purpose now moved slowly, listlessly, shoulders drooping. One evening, Anna’s six-year-old daughter followed her gaze, asking, "Mommy, what are you looking at?"

"I’m just watching Mrs. Smith come home. I know her heart is breaking, because her only daughter died of leukemia a few months ago. I don’t know what to do or what to say, but I wish there was something."

The Evolution of Freedom
by Jim Stempel

The day dawned clear and unusually mild for late fall. It was mid-morning when Abraham Lincoln closed the door behind him, mounted a large chestnut horse, and waited patiently for the parade to commence. It was the 19th of November 1863, and the streets were clogged to overflowing with soldiers, notables, and well-wishers. The event was the dedication of the new national cemetery; the location, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

National Security or National Smoke Screen?
by Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D.

While unemployment rages around the United States and thousands of families wonder where their next meal will come from, oil, timber, mining, and real estate interests are having a bountiful harvest. Under the guise of protecting national security, the Bush administration has been quietly reversing environmental policies, making legal settlements, and creating regulations that will rob our children of their future.

StarWatch
by James Jarvis, M.A.

By adding the universal year 2002 (2+0+0+2=4) to the 7th month of July, we come up with the vibration of 11/2. The main themes of a 2 month are reflection, cooperation, and harmonization. We can achieve a great deal this month by bringing our lives into greater balance and harmony and through working in cooperation with others. In a 2 month, we learn to harmonize with life so that it becomes a cooperative effort rather than just an individual one. Use this month to reflect on the new life experiences and directions that you initiated last month. Ask yourself: What is the universal feedback I am being given about the new directions I have chosen?

Lotus: Symbol of Spiritual Unfoldment
by Swami Kriyananda

In the East, the lotus is viewed as a symbol of spiritual unfoldment. The lotus has its roots in earthly mud, but as it grows upward in aspiration toward the light, its petals open out in a beautiful flower. Om Mani Padme Hum, meaning, "Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus," is the sacred mantra of the Tibetans. The Jewel in the Lotus is also the name of a play I wrote many years ago about how we, like the lotus, can transcend our current realities and offer up our lives in the successful pursuit of our highest aspirations, in this way fulfilling the very "jewel" of our desires.

Phytoestrogens: Friends or Foes?
by Susun S. Weed

Phytoestrogens are weak hormones found in many plants. They are currently being promoted, sometimes in highly refined forms, for relief of the symptoms of menopause. Are they safe? Can they promote breast cancer?

We know that increased exposure to hormones — such as those used in the cattle industry, those given to women during menopause, those taken by women engaged in hi-tech pregnancy efforts, and even those naturally produced by our own bodies — increases the risk of being diagnosed with cancer, especially breast cancer. And many believe that hormone-like chemicals — xenoestrogens — increasingly found in our food and water, contribute to cancer as well. Doesn't that imply that phytoestrogens will increase cancer risk too?

Restoring Balance with Vibrational Healing
by Joy Gardner

To get an overview of how vibrational healing works, it helps to understand that, compared to other life forms, human beings are easily thrown off balance by stress and tension. Stones and plants, on the other hand, hold a consistent vibratory frequency. Crystals are used in radios because they vibrate at a steady rate that corresponds to a specific radio band. When you place crystals and aromatic oils at various parts of your body, the vibrations of the body begin to entrain to the balanced healthy vibrations of these pure elements.

Discovering Animal Wisdom
by Patty-Lynne Herlevi

All my life I have been drawn to animals and have desired to communicate with them, but did not know how. Over time, I learned about the power and totem animals prominent in Native American spirituality. I began reading work by Lynn V. Andrews, Jamie Sams, and other medicine people that led me to form a new bond with animals through communicating with animal spirits the way ancient and contemporary people still practice. Recently I began working with animal omens (signs) and medicine card divination (David Carson and Jamie Sams’ Medicine Cards deck), and I have devised my own process to help others to connect to their animal guides. I would like to share with you what I have learned about working with totems.

Cancer: Emotional Healing through Trust
by Pam Younghans

The depths of human emotion are the proving ground for those of you born between June 21 and July 22, when the sun is in the sign of Cancer. As the fourth sign in the developmental cycle, Cancer represents one’s first experience of emotion through bonds to family, mother, and home. If you are a Cancer, your personal development relates directly to how you handle your feelings of vulnerability and your needs for emotional security in a sometimes harsh and unsafe world.

Program Yourself for Prosperity
by Christopher Howard

Are you tired of living from paycheck to paycheck? Are you sick of struggling in the rat race yet never getting anywhere financially? Are you ready to change your financial future once and for all? The solution you seek is all in your mind. Just ask Jon Andre Bliss.

Jon Andre had been working as a car salesman for a little more than four months, but he had been in sales for more than two years. As a rookie in the car business, he was doing pretty well. He was rated number 26 out of seventy salespeople at his dealership, and on his best month he had sold eight cars in thirty days; not bad to start, but he knew that he was capable of much more.

Intuitively Speaking
by Deborah Ilg

I’m very excited about July! Two words that I'd use to describe this month are passion and depth. Many people experienced an intense inner growth spurt in May and newfound strength into June, which brings us to an incredible month of clear conscious choice here in July.

I love the degree of consciousness in people these days; it's extraordinary. Sure, there's a lot of negativity around us. The flip side is that now, more than ever before, people realize that they have free will. You have a choice not only to look at fear and negativity, but to see the higher side of each situation you encounter. After getting through a tough first part of the year, you can use that knowledge to keep you moving even higher. You are able to make clear choices to witness, play a part in, or walk away from situations around you.
