Gemini: An Open Mind with a Teacher's Heart

by Pam Younghans

This is the third installment in a monthly series exploring the 12 astrological signs. In Western astrology, the heavens are divided into 12 equal sections, beginning at the vernal equinox with Aries and continuing through the rest of the zodiac. The dates generally associated with the various signs (May 20-June 21 for Gemini) are approximate; exact dates for the beginning and ending of the signs vary from year to year. Please consult an ephemeris or a qualified astrologer to verify your sun sign, and to get a more complete picture of your entire astrological chart. Although the description that follows may be especially pertinent for those who were born when the sun was in Gemini, it is also applicable in varying degrees for all of us, as we all have Gemini represented somewhere in our charts and somewhere in our lives.

We can trace a pattern of development as we journey through the 12 signs of the zodiac, understanding each sign as representing an important stage in the growth cycle. With Aries, we began a process of individuation and self-awareness; in Taurus, we saw a strengthening and stabilizing of values and self-worth. Gemini, as the third sign of the zodiac, adds a third dimension to the visual picture we are creating. With Gemini, we start reaching out into the world around us, communicating with other people, asking questions about life and putting our ideas into words.

If you were born when the sun was in Gemini, your symbol is the Twins, the perfect representation of your need to interact with other people and with your environment as a part of your personal fulfillment. You discover yourself through words and communication, whether written or spoken. Anything that stimulates your mind — new ideas, new people, new situations — is fulfilling for you, the key word being "new." Gemini has a strong need for fresh, interesting experiences to keep life satisfying. For you, it is definitely true that "variety is the spice of life."

And understanding your truth is a part of your primary goal, Gemini. The experimentation, the reaching out for more information and experience, is all a part of learning about who you really are and what you really think. But just like your symbol of the Twins, your purpose is twofold. Once you have gathered the information, the next step is to share what you have learned.

You are the Teacher, the Storyteller, the Writer, the Journalist. Like these archetypes, you are here to take what you have seen, learned, or experienced and to communicate it to others. You have wonderful skills with words, and naturally want to share what you know. You are most successful when both you and your listeners learn something new in the process.

Gemini is an air sign, corresponding with mental energies. Your ruling planet is Mercury, who in Greek mythology was known as the god Hermes, or "Quicksilver." Hermes had wings on his feet, was a quick thinker, and generally liked to keep things lively. Like the liquid metal that is his namesake, he was hard to pin down, but was always entertaining. As a Gemini, you carry those same traits of curiosity, vitality, and enthusiasm.

These characteristics correlate with the fact that Gemini is known as a "mutable" sign, indicating your ability to be flexible and to adapt to new situations. You are most comfortable with other air signs and fire signs, for you feed each other’s strengths. Relationships with water and earth signs may not flow as smoothly, but those friends offer you a grounding and connection to physical reality that may not always be a part of your natural makeup.

As the Teacher, your higher calling is not just to enhance your own knowledge, but also to educate others. You are called to step beyond self-orientation and to reach out to those around you, finding ultimate fulfillment in the interaction. At your highest level, you move beyond merely teaching what you have learned: you also include the ingredient of something uniquely yours, some new concept or perspective that you gained during your learning process. This ensures that you rise above the level of merely reciting facts or repeating what has already been discussed. It means that you have truly digested what you have learned, and have been able to integrate your experience. In this way, you become an integral part of the process.

As with all the signs, you have the choice of how to express your basic qualities. You have a wonderful enthusiasm when it comes to sharing what you know; however, part of your personal development involves learning how to be both speaker and listener. It will assist you in the fulfillment of your higher purpose to also be aware that the other person has something of value to offer. Your desire to "take it all in" means seeing both sides of a situation, even if it differs from your perspective. You must ultimately accept the duality of life, and realize that you are never going to be able to make it all make sense — even though you’d like to!

On a physical level, Gemini rules the arms, lungs, and nervous system. More than those born under other signs, you may use your hands and arms to punctuate what you are saying. Because you are so full of energy, you are susceptible to nervous tension, and can greatly benefit from rhythmic physical exercise such as walking or aerobics as a release mechanism. Remember, however, that you are easily bored, so find some physical outlet that supplies interest and variety if you want to maintain an exercise program.

If your sun sign is Gemini, you have been given a wonderful curiosity and a desire to explore and interact with life. You are optimistic and open-minded, qualities that carry you successfully through life. Your opposite sign, Sagittarius, offers additional information that will assist you in creating the satisfying life you were born to experience.

Like you, Gemini, Sagittarians want life to be exciting and interesting. However, for Sagittarians, the adventure lies in exploring the deeper meaning behind the facts, beyond the words, between the lines. Balancing your innate talent for logical reasoning with an ability to accept the mystery can enhance your life and help you to find the wholeness that you seek.

Gemini, you are the information gatherer, the conversationalist, the learner, the teacher. With your youthful exuberance, you add interest to our lives and keep us learning and growing as well. When you learn to harness the power of the mind in positive ways, your possibilities are endless.
