In Black Holes and Energy Pirates, author Jesse Reeder has set out to help us understand human energy fields and, through that understanding, to activate our personal creative energy and align our lives with our true desires.

Reeder describes human energy fields as similar to electromagnetic energy, "a soft, invisible field flowing through and around us that attracts complementary patterns of human interaction just as a magnet attracts iron." She goes on to suggest that it is possible to attract consciously what we want in our lives rather than to create unconsciously that which blocks our energy.

Human energy fields are made up of our thoughts, emotions, and intentions. We’re all familiar with other people’s energy fields. It’s that energy we refer to when we say things like "She gives off good vibes." We’re not as aware of our own energy fields, and even less aware of how our fields interact with all the other fields around us.

When we are with others, our energy fields overlap and interact. This can balance, expand, or even contract the group’s energy as a whole. When we feel great and everything seems to be going our way, our positive, expansive energy affects everyone around us, often raising the group energy to new creative heights.

Unfortunately, we all have unconscious ways of blocking our own and other people’s energy. The purpose of Black Holes and Energy Pirates is to teach us to recognize and release our blocks so that we can expand our energy fields. Reeder uses examples from her own life to illustrate her points. Many of these are intensely personal and honest, especially the story of the humiliating and very public firing from her CEO position at an electrical utility. Others are universal, such as a rough meeting at work. Many, if not most, of the examples in the book are work-related, but they do fit other life situations.

The "black holes and energy pirates" in the title refer to energy blocks. Black holes are concentrations of emotional energy we have hidden deep inside ourselves. They result from uncomfortable, painful, and even traumatic experiences that we have pushed down into our subconscious in order to protect ourselves from the pain. Energy pirating, on the other hand, is when we take energy from others in order to fulfill our own needs.

Black Holes and Energy Pirates describes in great detail how and why people block energy, and then offers practical tools help release those blocks. Reeder offers two methods for finding, accepting, and releasing blocks: a psychotherapy-style approach and a body-centered approach. She is very honest about how difficult the release process can be, and doesn’t promise any quick fixes: "Some black holes are such a fundamental way of life that they take some time to release. For these, have patience with yourself..."

Fortunately, Reeder assures us that those deep black holes become easier to release each time and that, in fact, the whole process of discovering and accepting energy blocks works to release their control. Just reading the book helped me discover some of my own black holes.

The author closes by reminding us that how we live our lives and use our energy is a choice. The choices we make leave a lasting energy legacy. She believes that together we can create and experience a collective energy that is balanced and loving. By sharing her knowledge and offering us the tools in this book, Reeder encourages us to join in and help fulfill her belief.
