When I first saw the title of this book, I was intrigued. I have read a variety of books on Feng Shui and attended workshops on the subject. Most deal with the wealth area to some degree, but a whole book on the subject of abundance seemed almost overwhelming. Once I started reading, however, I realized that Hilton is presenting the subject in a whole different manner. She is not simply writing about the space in your room or home; instead, she writes about how to open yourself energetically to the abundance of the universe. Moreover, she gives specific "action steps" to help you begin this process. Using the River of Gold as a metaphor, Hilton discusses how to float on the current of creative energy, which is how she defines money.

The River of Gold is made up of five currents: the Feng Shui current, the body sensations current, the emotional current, the creative current, and the rational current. Hilton devotes a chapter to each of these currents as well as various hazards one may face on the journey, such as water hazards or financial difficulties, the doldrums or overcoming personal and professional obstacles, and emerging from the desert or rebuilding your wealth from the ground up.

Each chapter is made up of fundamental information about the current or hazard, as well as action steps — which are often reflective and meditative exercises — one may take to become more aware of this part of the energetic puzzle. Hilton also recommends keeping a Travel Log to record your journey and your responses to specific exercises. I found myself constantly jotting down insights as I read and responded to her suggestions.

It is only at the end, where she discusses the process of securing financial stability, that Hilton’s CPA background becomes more obvious. Even so, it is in a creative and intuitive way, making the "job" of creating a spending plan a relaxing way to include your dreams and future aspirations in your day-to-day handling of money. In the end, breathing deeply as Hilton suggests, I felt lighthearted and positive about the money-as-energy connection, and began to understand one of Hilton’s main theses, namely that "breath is the key that unlocks the door to more ease, more energy, and abundance."
