AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE GARDEN OF EDEN
A Jew’s Search for God with Christians
and Muslims in the Holy Land
by YOSSI KLEIN HALEVI
William Morrow
$25 (hardcover)

Beyond Yossi Klein Halevi’s credentials as a Jewish Israeli journalist, his legitimacy to write this book are contained in this statement: "I am a religious Jew for whom the Jewish story ... is the context in which I try to encounter the miraculous. And I am a religious pluralist who believes that all the great religions are in effect denominations in one great religion, which teaches the primacy of the unseen over the visible and of unity over fragmentation."

Armed with these beliefs, Halevi seeks in this book to explore the devotions of Muslims, Christians, and Jews as a means of dialogue within the multiple viewpoints of the Holy Land. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Halevi says, "Judaism was my language of intimacy with God."

The question we writing instructors most often get is, "How do I put my own experiences, my own beliefs, into my writing in a way that others will want to read?" It’s a reasonable question, as most of us have had the experience of failing to impress listeners with the importance of what we know, what we feel, what has happened to us.

The answer I give to that question is, "These are the things readers most want to hear. Writers and readers want to connect through written work with feelings, thoughts, and experiences. The problem for the author or poet is how to deliver these things in a way that involves the reader."
