CHAKRAS
Balance Your Body’s Energy for Health and Harmony
by PATRICIA MERCIER
Godsfield Press
($14.95, softcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

True to their usual style, Godsfield has produced another visual delight with Patricia Mercier’s Chakras. Appropriate to the topic, which has strong ties to color, the book is filled with pictures and diagrams that help more visually oriented readers. Meanwhile, there is plenty of text to introduce one to the subject of chakras.

While this book does not purport to plumb the depths of chakra mysteries, its pages take us through definitions, histories, and different cultural approaches to the body’s energy system, known frequently as the chakras. Along the way, it gives exercises for sensing the subtle energies of the body and offers techniques that can enhance the health of individual chakras. The ideas here are no shock for those well-versed in spiritual exercises, but they can be fun for those starting along the path.

SIMPLE WICCA
by MICHELE MORGAN
Conari Press
$14.95 (hardcover)

reviewed by Madeline Weise

This delightful little book gives a broad overview of a centuries-old tradition, as practiced by a modern witch. However, the descriptions and explanations of the philosophies and rituals inspired me to want to learn more.

In the second chapter, Michele Morgan describes how this religion has an autonomous, eclectic approach to worship. Wicca encourages followers to develop a personal religious practice based on one's own experiences, wisdom, and instincts. Its system of ethics is based on personal honor rather than external rules and punishments. After committing to the three basic, highly moral principles, each practitioner is free to pursue what she or he wants to learn from it. The rituals and magic are open to experimentation and interpretation, yet at the same time, this religion highly values community and tolerance of the diversity that it encourages.

THE ENERGY SECRET
Practical Techniques for Understanding and Directing Vital Energy
by JANE ALEXANDER
Thorsons
($24.95, hardcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

The Energy Secret is an introductory book, guiding the reader into the basics of energy. Its focus is not on explanatory texts, though, but on exercises to help the reader learn through experience. This is not to say that the author neglects the foundational ideas behind such exercises; but as with any introduction, there is only so much one can say. Rather than entering deeply into the mysteries of energy, Ms. Alexander seems to realize that we must experience an idea to understand it — then we can legitimately enter further in.

KABBALAH DECODER
Revealing the Messages of the Ancient Mystics
by JANET BERENSON-PERKINS
Barron’s
($21.95, hardcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

Kabbalah Decoder is a beautifully designed and illustrated book that, like so many others today, introduces us to the basics of Kabbalah. There are some important differences, however, that do make this a unique work, and one from which a beginning student may gain a lot.

First among these differences is that many of today’s titles are written from a Christian, alchemical, or other approach, whereas this one roots itself in the traditional Judaic approach. One won’t find Tree of Life (the traditional Kabbalistic glyph) associations with tarot, for instance, though the book does include a chapter showing how Kabbalah relates to a number of different mystical teachings.
