Building the Library:
Collecting References for Spiritual Study

by Steve McCardell

The dawn of a new year, no matter how arbitrary human-made dates may be, represents something within each person. The winter months call for reflection, and the new year pushes one to renew that zeal for growth. There are a million ways to approach this, but if you’re reading this, you might just be rethinking that spiritual library of yours. And if you smack your lips at books to encourage spiritual ideas, reference books may just be the needed spur. These are some of the goodies I’ve received in the last year.

KRYON 2000: PASSING THE MARKER
(Book 8 of the Kryon series)
by LEE CARROLL
The Kryon Writings
$14 (softcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

If you know Lee Carroll’s work with Kryon (the magnetic master whom Lee channels), you already know the basic flavor — and importantly, the feel — of book 8. (Kryon readers are grinning and nodding now.) If you’ve never introduced yourself to this series (and are wondering about the grinning and nodding), you need to try out the energy that comes through in a Kryon book. It is the feel of warm hugs and home, wrapped ironically in the intellectual trappings of "science meets spirit."

It is that apparent irony that makes Lee’s work with Kryon so important and enjoyable. Those who know the balance of spirit will understand that, in fact, there is no irony when spirit offers hugs alongside intellectual intrigues. Yet, in a field where it is so easy to lose one’s footing on the earth (or in a physical world where it is so easy to forget there is a sky), newcomers to the Kryon work will be pleased by the ride they can take along that veil between two worlds.

FATHER ERNETTI’S CHRONOVISOR
The Creation and Disappearance of
the World’s First Time Machine
by PETER KRASSA
New Paradigm Books
$16.95 (softcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

It seems that this past summer I made a grave error; I wish to amend it now. I was attracted to Father Ernetti’s Chronovisor as soon as it arrived at The New Times, but never quite understanding what the book was, I continued to pass on it for review. When I recently tackled it just to better know my draw to the thing, I found myself on a journey that I knew I must share. While The New Times works to review only the latest titles, this one (at just over half a year old) deserves a second look.

Purporting to be a biography, the book is a great deal more. Yes, it is fascinating enough as a biography — it tells of a scientist/theologian who developed a machine to look into the past — but it is also much more. To set the context of Father Ernetti, to show how his chronovisor fit into the human quest for spirit, the author also offers fascinating accounts of others who have added so much to our spiritual understandings. The chronovisor, after all, purported to grasp both sounds and images from the still-existent waves of the past, held forever in the Akashic records.

ARCHITECTS OF PEACE
Visions of Hope in Words and Images
by MICHAEL COLLOPY
New World Library
$40 (hardcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

Architects of Peace caught my attention as soon as it arrived at The New Times. I felt right away how important this book is, its energy radiating in a way that few books’ can claim to. It’s hardly a surprise that the images of such potent workers as Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela grace the cover, but — and I am not one to make such claims lightly — I can almost feel the power of the words in the book seeping through the cover to surround me.

TURNING ILLNESS INTO GROWTH
Understanding the Modern Healer
by RANDALL LEOFSKY
Sunshine Press Publications
$17.95 (softcover)

reviewed by Melanie Rieck,
Reiki practitioner

Many of us have books on our shelves about healing, but it is rare to find one that manages to be pithy and provocative, as well as practical. Randall Leofsky’s Turning Illness into Growth — Understanding the Modern Healer is such a book.

Are we bodies with spirits, or spirits with bodies? Based on his clinical experience using acupuncture, energetic healing, and clairvoyant reading, Leofsky sees that in each of us spirit takes a body to learn and grow. Thus illness is not a random event happening to a biochemical machine; it is inherently spiritual, with an energetic component at the root. Illness is a message from spirit giving us an opportunity to come to terms with an issue.

A THEORY OF EVERYTHING
An Integral Vision for Business, Politics, Science, and Spirituality
by KEN WILBER
Shambhala
$21.95 (hardcover)

reviewed by Steve McCardell

It’s rare enough that I put a book upon my shelf of must-reads. It’s far more rare for me to name an author as a must-read, ranking many of his or her titles among the elite on my shelves. Ken Wilber, however, is one of these authors. Having gained the attention of scholars and critics all over, and receiving accolades from such well-known authors as Deepak Chopra, Wilber achieves in his work what few minds would dare to attempt. Drawing on a formidable list of philosophers and scientists, he pulls a taut band around them with his own powerful theories about how things work.
